But let us start.
Shall we rent the ferret-team sled?
Or the marmoset rickshaw?
Or shall we fly on afterthoughts?
from “Orangetude! Chocoletude!” an Emu Dialogue by Jens Köhler & Luciano Iacobelli
“Back-scratch My Inner Jackass”
Filmmaker Neal Colgrass made a film about the launch of our book, The Emu Dialogues. (We = Robert Marra, Luciano Iacobelli and yours truly.) The book celebrates EMU, our playful form of “linguistic desperation” for homo ludens.
Get a taste of what emu was all about that night. I say “was” because, as Luc’ says, “The minute you know something about it is also the minute you forget it.”
Then purchase the book! I can think of at least three outstanding ways to do so:
- In Los Angeles, ask for it at Skylight Books or any other local, independent bookstore. They know how to order it. (Advantage: local independent bookstores!!!)
- Get it from Amazon through this link. (Advantage: I get an extra 40 cents).
- Get it straight from the publisher, Quattro Books. (Advantage: currency arbitrage if buying from U.S.!)
One of the YUGE advantages of possessing this book is you get to see how Robert Marra’s long, concrete poem “The Word,” which combines imagery and text, centers the book. Robert is a painter, mostly abstract and conceptual — really good, and he explores the visual properties of English as he elevates, tinkers with, and throws his hands up about language.
When I figure out how to post audio of our interview on HOWL on CIUT FM then I will.
